Frequently asked questions
10000% YES!!! I have been doing this for years and the answer is yes. This is not our first rodeo.
According to the California Vehicle code (CVC 400 (a) and CVC 405), an M1 Motorcycle License is required to operate
ANY two-wheeled vehicle that doesn’t have pedals—either a motor-driven cycle (149cc and below) or a Motorcycle
(150cc and above) . An M2 License is for mopeds---which are motorized vehicles with pedals. Our fleet of scooters
are M1 compliant.
As you can see, any two-wheeled vehicle that do not have pedals REQUIRE an California M1 License to operate legally,
thus you have to be able to test on them.

No. Not everyone can use the scooter to take the test. There are two sets of requirements—1 set from the DMV
and the other set from DMV Scooter Rental–and both have to be fulfilled
DMV requirements
DMV requirements
- Must have a current California Motorcycle Permit
- Must be at least 21 years old DMVScooterRental Requirements
- You must be an experienced, competent rider
- This service is NOT for people learning how to ride. You must know how to ride beforehand and you will be asked to demonstrate your abilities and attest to that on our Waiver
With roughly 30 minutes of practice, a vast majority of our DMV Scooter Rental customers are able to master
and pass the test.
DMV Scooter Rental believes we should be fully honest. With that said, we are certain you will fail if you don’t practice. We have tested hundreds of people and only a handful passed with less than 5 minutes of practice.
The DMV M1 Motorcycle license exam does NOT allow you to make any mistakes, which is why practice is important.

Here are the DMV Motorcycle riding test automatic failure violations:
- Front tire goes outside the lines
- You can touch the lines but not go outside
- The rear tire doesn’t matter
- If any part of the two-wheeled vehicle touches the cones(blue dots in the middle of the image)
- If during the test you put your foot down
- If you go faster than walking speed

The Speed limit!!
The DMV Motorcycle M1 exam requires riders to navigate the course while never exceeding 2-3 miles per hour, which translates to walking speed.
The overwhelming reason people fail the DMV Motorcycle M1 Test on a big motorcycles is because getting a 400 pound motorcycle to make 2 sharp circles while at a crawling speed is extremely challenging, especially while modulating the clutch
However, our fleet of scooters have no clutch–they are fully automatic. They are also lean and light. Operating an automatic scooter at 2-3 miles per hour is natural for the vehicle, plus the riding geometry is sitting up right, which makes the test even easier

How much are new fairings or gas tank dent repair?
You can definitely use your motorcycle to pass the California DMV Motorcycle M1 exam; however, you will have to spend several hours practicing and put a lot of wear and tear on your motorcycle. You will be burning your clutch for hours, spending hours of gas, and you will also be risking dropping your motorcycle.
DMV Scooter Rental has scores of customers who overcooked their master cylinder while practicing on their motorcycle, which cost them several hundred in parts and labor. We also have dozens of testimonies from individuals who dented their gas tank or damaged their fairings because they dropped their motorcycle while practicing.
The only regret they ALL had was not booking a DMV Scooter Rental from the beginning.

Yes. Most DMV Motorcycle courses are drawn on super flat parking lots, but there are some that were
essentially drawn on a steep incline/decline or worse appear to be a skateboarding half-pipe.
However, even the half-pipe course is super passable with the same amount of practice as the courses that are drawn on a super flat and ideal surface.
We tend to encourage people to test at DMVs near their house because they are familiar with the layout and employees, plus making time to practice is most convenient that way.

The vast majority of DMVs do NOT allow you to practice once they are open. That typically means you will have
to practice before they open, after they close or on the weekend.
However, DMV Scooter Rental has the ability to bring the DMV Course to your house. Without getting into detail and exposing our trade secrets, our service includes your very own course at your house.
It makes it so you can practice on your time and be fully prepared to pass the Motorcycle M1 Riding Exam on the first try.
