Motorcycle Rental for the DMV M1 Test

Need a bike for your California DMV riding test? You do not have to own one, and you do not have to sit through a three-day safety course. We rent you a DMV-ready automatic machine, you take the skills test on it, and you ride away with a full Class M1 licence.

Motorcycle or scooter — which should you rent for the test?

Most people who search for a motorcycle rental are picturing a full-size bike. It is worth knowing what the exam actually measures before you commit to one.

The California DMV skills test is scored entirely at walking pace — a tight circle, a figure eight, a slow weave, and a controlled stop. There is no freeway section, no highway merge, and nothing that rewards displacement or power. Every point available is a point for balance and low-speed throttle control.

That is why a heavy manual motorcycle works against you here. Feathering a clutch at 5 mph while holding a tight radius is the hardest thing a new rider can be asked to do, and the penalties are brutal: stall, put a foot down, or drop the bike and the attempt is over. On your own motorcycle, a drop also means paying for the damage.

Our rentals are automatic Yamaha scooters — the SMAX 155 and the Zuma — chosen specifically because they remove the two things that fail people: the clutch and the weight.

What the rental includes

  • A maintained, DMV-ready Yamaha SMAX 155 or Zuma for your appointment
  • Practice time before the test — get comfortable on the machine first
  • Step-by-step course videos showing exactly what the examiner scores
  • A full, unrestricted M1 licence when you pass — no scooter-only restriction

What you need to bring

We rent to riders who are ready to test, not to first-timers learning from scratch:

  • 1 A valid California motorcycle permit — you must have already passed the DMV written test
  • 2 The ability to ride safely on a motorcycle or scooter
  • 3 A booked DMV appointment, or talk to us and we will help you plan around one

Still need the written test? Work through our free M1 practice test first.

Common questions

Can I rent a motorcycle to take the California DMV skills test?

Yes. You do not have to own a bike to take the M1 riding test. We rent you a DMV-ready machine for your appointment, you take the test on it, and you hand it back when you are done. You only need to bring a valid California motorcycle permit and your own helmet-legal gear.

Do you rent motorcycles or scooters?

We rent automatic scooters — the Yamaha SMAX 155 and the Yamaha Zuma. Riders searching for a motorcycle rental almost always end up choosing a scooter once they understand the test, because the DMV skills exam is scored entirely on slow-speed control. A lighter automatic machine is simply easier to pass on.

Does passing on a scooter give me a restricted licence?

No. Passing the California skills test on our scooter earns a full, unrestricted Class M1 licence — the same licence you would get testing on a 600cc sportbike. You can legally ride any motorcycle afterwards.

How much does it cost compared to the CMSP course?

The California Motorcyclist Safety Program course runs about $450 and takes roughly three days. Our rental is around half that and most riders are finished in about an hour. See our pricing page for the current rate.

Can I practise before the test?

Yes. Practice time on the rental is included, and we give you step-by-step videos of the exact course layout so you know what the examiner is scoring before you ride. Most riders have the course mastered in under twenty minutes.
